Choosing an AI coding assistant: decide by workflow, not hype

A practical evaluation checklist for teams comparing code agents and AI development assistants.

Start with the work you need done

Some assistants are strongest at focused edits; others help investigate broad repositories, design interfaces or run tests. Decide what a good result looks like for your actual workflow before comparing brands or model names.

List the repositories, frameworks, access boundaries and testing requirements the assistant must handle. A fast demonstration is less useful than a verified change that your team can maintain.

Compare the entire engineering loop

A serious evaluation should include repository understanding, scoped file edits, test execution, dependency safety, reviewable pull requests, rollback options and cost visibility. Ask whether the tool can explain what it changed and how it verified the result.

When an agent can modify live systems, limit credentials to the minimum it needs. Use branches and preview deployments. Keep production releases behind explicit human approval.

Test with one real task

Give each assistant the same small but representative issue. Evaluate correctness, maintainability, accessibility where relevant, automated test quality and number of follow-up corrections. Document the date and versions used: recommendations change as these tools evolve.

The best tool is the one that repeatedly delivers trustworthy results for your team—not necessarily the tool with the most impressive launch video.
